  1. Anindya da….Bazin writes and i quote-”between the originating object and its reproduction there intervenes only the instrumentality of the nonliving agent.”…..well, Bazin certainly addresses the act of reproduction but wat abt the act of representation???? act of reproduction may not incorporate the act of representation…..though in the very next line there is a mention of the purpose of the photographer……but he again he negates it by suggesting the photographer’s absence…..i find this contradictory……and as to the act of representation, i find bazin a bit indifferent, i.e. in the pariticular essay that is being discussed in the class…..

Anindya Sengupta: will address this Dhriti. Actually, i want to move further in his other essays before doing so, otherwise things might not get properly explained.

  2. yes…i feel the same too…i’m confused…maybe due to lack of proper initiation…

Anindya Sengupta: Uh huh. You are on the right path. Bazin is not an easy thinker. He is bound to provoke questions

  9. Anindya da…..kalke searchers dekhlam……akhon Cheyenne Autumn….had strong feelings……

Cheyenne Autumn could have been Ford’s emphatic sojourn in Purgatory. But what Ford initiates in Searchers through the dissipation and ultimate resignation of the character of John Wayne, who remains an isolated and dispersed character at the end of the film, he sort of undoes it in Cheyenne Autumn for the film tries to approach a particular destination, a closure. The film seems to be making an ardent effort to be sure and certain for it tries to identify and address. Searchers tries to initiate a process of disintegration and commotion which could have ultimately lead to some earnest soul-searching, but Cheyenne Autumn does a reversal of sorts when it tries to integrate and unify. But this effort ultimately leads to an establishment of a hegemony and this is where the role of signs(the English language)in this film becomes tyrannical and violent and obscene. The little wounded Indian girl who returns to her own place, her own abode after a long year comes to signify it by the sign “H-O-M-E”…can anything be more obscene than this????? Its no surprise that Little Wolf has no place in this “enlightened” Cheyenne tribe…just like the peace-pipe finds itself abandoned.

But the sequence of Dodge city came like a whiff of fresh air. Reflexive and sincerely critical i found it as one of the few things to cherish in the film.

Hope u have fodder for the next post … :)
